If a stranger were to open your closet and stand in front of it right now, what would they do? Would they be impressed by how organised the space is, or will they obsess about the parts that need tidying up? We’re willing to bet on the latter.
As much as you try to clean up your space, unless you have a custom walk-in wardrobe, there’s a high chance that it won’t be completely clutter-free. If you fantasise often about that magazine-worthy storage and drawers that seem to only exist in celebrity homes, then it’s probably time to act on that desire and have a wardrobe designed for your home.
Now before you go around scheduling a consultation with a wardrobe designer, there are some things you can do so when you meet with the experts, you already have a clear idea of what you want.
Here we discuss the things you have to consider before you get the modern closet or wardrobe of your dreams:
Define Your Fashion Style – The more seasons there are, the more clothes you have. That’s just the reality of things. So, if you live in New Zealand, there’s a high chance that you have a sizeable number of clothes, shoes, and accessories. Before you get a closet custom built, ask yourself, “what items in my wardrobe are non-negotiable?” Do you really need super thick sweaters? Or can you survive on padded ones? Do you have a lot of denim pants, or can you stay comfortable year-round with polyester or wool?
Knowing which items will always be part of your ensemble will give you a better idea of the type of storage you need. If thick sweaters are a must, then make sure your closet can accommodate them. The same goes for all the other garments in your collection.
Work With a Focal Theme – One of the best things about closet customisation is that you get to pick the colour and the woodgrain of the installation. If your home was not designed with a specific theme in mind, now’s the time to do so. Remember that if your wardrobe doesn’t match all the other pieces in your room, instead of beautifying the space, it might just end up an eyesore. If you can’t really tell or if you can’t decide, take a picture of the space, and show it to your designer. They should be able to help you pick the best closet styles that will address your aesthetic and functional demands.
Specify How Modern You Want to Go – Modern isn’t an all-encompassing term for clean or neat. Some people can’t even tell the difference between modern and minimalist. You need to understand the word modern is actually subjective and refers to anything progressive, so you can’t just say you want a modern wardrobe and be done with it. You need to specify what exactly it is that you consider modern so your designer can come up with a look that will match your expectations.
Ask yourself, by modern, do you mean modern looking? Or are you referring to something that’s fully automated and tech-heavy? Because depending on which one you need, you might have to look for a company that can cater to your requirements. So really, how much closer you are to your dreams depends a whole lot on the specifics of said dream.
What’s Your Timeline? – The rule of thumb is if you want something to be done fast and with high quality, be prepared to spend a lot on it. If you want it done fast but you want to lower the costs, expect the quality to suffer. Either way, if you’re not realistic about your delivery time expectations, you’re unlikely to be satisfied by the end results. If you want something luxurious that you can be proud of, give the designers and the builders ample time to apply careful craftsmanship to your wardrobe.
Consider Fusions – European style wardrobes are more vintage than modern, but these two styles can be mixed and matched to create something entirely unique and new. Modern accents can be used to upgrade the European look of your closet and drawers. If executed properly, you might even end up futureproofing your wardrobe.
Make It Dual Purpose – Just because it’s a closet doesn’t mean it can’t be used for something else. Some people use their closets as play areas for pets and kids. This makes clean-up easy and could also present several opportunities to train kids to keep their spaces clean. Some homeowners use their closets as a reading nook with shelves dedicated to housing their favourite bestsellers.
